Earliest and pivotal usages of some of the more common memes on alt.religion.kibology.

Note that some of these memes originated outside a.r.k, in some cases before a.r.k existed. Generally no attempt has been made to track back to such non-ark origins.

See also Kibo's Exegesis Page, which however discusses far fewer memes and at this writing hasn't been updated since May 2000, SO THERE.

Memes are listed by the search string used. Ordering is kind of alphabetical, except where related memes seemed to need grouping. Follow the name/date link to see message.

These certainly aren't all the interesting early usages of the memes, merely the firsts. Follow the search string links to see Goolge's summaries of earliest usages, and use them as jumping-off points for your own exploration of meme-history.

If Goolge tells you it can't display an article, try hitting reload a time or two. Often it's just because Goolge's busy, and of course hitting reload will greatly alleviate that situation.

Oh, and this doesn't belong here but it is: First archived Usenet post by Kibo.

A number of recent memes are missing from this list. Hint, hint.

abian "to become a"

Fully, "VENUS MUST BE GIVEN A NEAR EARTH-LIKE ORBIT TO BECOME A BORN AGAIN EARTH" from the sig of Alexander Abian, and variants/parodies thereof. It's difficult to catch all variants in a search without getting inundated in false positives, given that "to become a" is about the only part that rarely varies; but many turn up accompanying explicit references to Abian.

"all over you screen"

In full form, "So much * that it is all over you [sic] screen!"

"all the candy in the world"

"all your base"

and

"for great justice"

Twin Zero Wing memes.

"broke the internet"

"bzzzzzzzt gaaaaaaahhh"

Particularly difficult meme to search for since there are so many variant spellings (i.e., different numbers of z's, a's, and h's). The reference is to Pig Spooz, 31 Mar 93 by Gerald Belton in alt.tasteless, I (Not R) believe originally by Otto Bahn.

"cool table"

crow penguin

That is, "crow" corrected to "penguin" or vice versa.

"dancing bears"

and

"dancing bears of"

"damn near killed"

Fully, "Rectum? Damn near killed 'im!" and variants.

"does this" "better than you"

donut

As misspelling of "do not"; obviously hard to search for, what with its being interspersed with "donut" meaning "toroidal breadstuff".

durian

Etienne fake name

(See also "if that is your real name")
  • 26 Oct 2000 by E Teflon Piano Etienne Rouette's name had long been a target for wackyparsing, but when E Teflon tried to steal it he was snottily told it was a fake name.

"fixed your"

and

ifypfy

The full meme in canonical form is "I fixed your post for you", acronymized to "IFYPFY", but it took nearly five years to evolve to this form, after which its popularity skyrocketed.

hmas

Kibology's main official holiday. Presumably a callback to the Giant H meme (Q.V.)

"I hardly know"

Fully, "*er? I hardly know her!"

"I heartily endorse this product and/or service"

This seems to be unsearchable on Google anymore, but it's traceable to a quote from The Simpsons, Krusty the Clown's deadpan "I heartily endorse this event or product," probably first introduced here:

"if that is your real name"

Used presumably seriously by an alt.conspiracy crossposter:
Memified for use in trolling in response to Ted Frank a couple months later:

"if you know what i mean"

and

"right now if you know"

and

"i think you do"

Memes occurring in combinations like "I'm * right now, if you know what I mean" and "*, if you know what I mean, and I think you do" and the fully-developed (if you know what I mean, and I think you do) "I'm * right now, if you know what I mean, and I think you do".

and

"in bed" "on fire" "the clown" "the den"

Four related memes, obviously tough searches alone (especially "the clown" and "the den", since Google ignores "the" even when you tell it not to), but often used together.

Fully, "inside a * it's too dark to *" (use the second link to skip Bill Marcum's sig).

"obvious bag"

"peanus"

  • 06 Jun 1992: found by Kibo in alt.sex.bondage: Variant spelling of "penis" used by guys too clueless to spell their way out of the men's room with both hands. For some reason, "peanus" is a funny word. It's pretty common on alt.sex.*.

plonk

and

plonkfest

"poor spot"

"restriction disco"

Fully, "restriction disco still in effect".

"same as in town"

Fully "Twenty [originally, and sometimes since then, fifty] bucks, same as in town" (and variants). For use in response to "What is Kibology?" use "same as in town" "what is kibology". See also What Price Kibology?

"stapler is behind you"

STOP CAKEHOLING PLANKTON

Interestingly, the word "cakehole" showed up just a month after the American "pie hole" in 1994, and rumbled along as a quiet little meme of its own until 2000, when Beable used it in taking exception to Not R's characterization of certain repulsive invertebrates. Joe Bay responded with a reference to a certain road sign whose memehood long predated Kibology, possibly also recalling an old signature including "Save the plankton."

subscirbe

thadvancenks

and

thaadvancenks

a Usenet meme for about ten years or more before being picked up in a.r.k.

"the enb"

"this is" fetish

Fully, "THIS IS * FETISH" -- usually in all caps. A tough one to Goolge for, with lots of false positives. Originally began as THIS IS PENIS FETISH in a story told by M. Otis Beard about an ex-roommate:

"this post is about"

and

"this post is all about"

Both variants in common use.

"thousand dollars" post again

That is, the idea that if, after asserting one will never again post to some newsgroup, one does, then one owes $1000 to everyone reading that newsgroup.

"tounge of frog"

  • 22 Jan 1995 by Eddie Saxe (in a.h.b-o-u) Froggy's ark post is unarchived, but here's Eddie's crosspost of it to alt.humor.best-of-usenet. (Froggy says this was actually about the third time he posted it.)

wearing pants

and

pants "while posting"

  • 18 Apr 1993 by James "Kibo" Parry References to pantslessness are numerous from early on; this seems to be the first "I'm not wearing pants".
  • 12 Jul 1995 by David DeLaney First apparent reference to the idea of not wearing pants while posting as a Kibological doctrine. It seems to refer to this as a pre-existing idea; note, though, that the claim that this is in the IFAQ is untrue. Nor is it in the FAQ of that era.

"welcome datacomp"

"what is kibology"

"who is kibo"

and

"who's kibo"

and

"jub'f xvob"

Three forms of the same question.

"will now explain"

Fully, "* will now explain the joke" and variants thereof.

wish cornfield

Fully, "wish you into a cornfield".

worst ever

Another difficult meme to search for, since it's a variable phrase "worst * ever" and must occur in suitable context.

"Yes."

Impossible to search for if you don't already know the origin. A trivial response from Beable elicited a rant so timeless we probably all think it was much longer ago than 2003.

"you are" "and i claim"

Perhaps Kibology's oldest meme, going back several decades before there was an Internet.

"you have been trolled"

and

"you have lost"

and

yhbt

Two memes commonly used together, and commonly acronymized.

"you misspelled"

"you're allowed"

The central meme of Kibology.
